Safety Monitor

Are you welcoming to meeting new people and like working with diverse individuals?  If so, consider a position as a Safety Monitor in the City of Champaign Equity and Engagement Department. 

Responsibilities of Position
Safety Monitors are civilians who engage with residents and visitors in the downtown Champaign Entertainment District during late night programming on Fridays and Saturdays. They use de-escalation, community credibility and cultural responsiveness to create and sustain a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Safety Monitors coordinate with private security and Champaign police on security concerns and interrupt potential threats of violence in the district. The work schedule is 8 pm- 2 am Friday and Saturday with four additional hours through the week determined by supervision to prepare for the weekend and also to debrief after weekend events.
This is a part-time, 16-hours per week position available from May 20, 2024, to October 18, 2024. The principal duties of this position are performed in an outdoor environment that may expose the employee to adverse weather conditions, excessive noise, and other outdoor environmental elements.

The salary is $18.14 per hour. For first consideration, applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, April 14, 2024. Position will remain open until filled.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Completed coursework without a diploma or certificate will be considered. 
  • Professional or volunteer experience with community engagement, community service, or public service.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and observation skills.
  • Effective conflict resolution and de-escalation skills. 
  • Physical condition necessary to perform the duties of the job including working in crowds and walking or moving around for long periods of time, with or without accommodation.
  • Must complete all required training including first aid, CPR, and AED.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience involving a high level of public contact.
