Overview:
The Champaign County Chamber of Commerce is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and politically astute Director of Public Policy to lead our advocacy efforts and represent the interests of our member businesses at the local, state, and federal levels. This individual will serve as the Chamber’s voice in public affairs, proactively tracking legislation and regulatory issues, engaging with elected officials, and mobilizing our membership on key policy matters.
Key Responsibilities:
Advocacy & Government Relations
- Monitor political and regulatory developments at all levels of government and provide timely updates and analysis to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Chamber membership.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with elected officials and municipal/county staff.
- Represent the Chamber at governmental meetings and public hearings as needed.
- Develop and manage grassroots advocacy initiatives and issue campaigns to mobilize member engagement.
- Organize legislative events, briefings, and advocacy trips to Springfield and Washington, D.C.
- Draft monthly public policy articles for the Chamber’s magazine and produce a weekly e-newsletter focused on relevant legislative and regulatory developments.
- Maintain and update the advocacy section of the Chamber’s website, ensuring timely and accurate representation of our policy positions.
- Provide briefing materials and talking points for the President & CEO, the Chamber Board, and PAC leaders.
Committee & PAC Support
- Serve as staff liaison to three ongoing Chamber committees related to policy and advocacy; manage meeting logistics and facilitate issue discussion.
- Convene ad hoc task forces or working groups on emerging issues impacting the business community.
- Support the Chamber’s Political Action Committee (PAC), including agenda development, candidate surveys and interviews, board packet preparation, and implementation of all PAC board actions.
- Ensure compliance with state election and PAC reporting laws; prepare and submit all required filings and meeting minutes.
- Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Communications, or a related field. Master’s degree or relevant certifications a plus.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in public policy, government affairs, or advocacy—preferably in a business association, nonprofit, or government setting.
- Strong understanding of the legislative process and regulatory environment.
- Exceptional communication skills—both written and verbal.
- Proven ability to cultivate relationships and build consensus among diverse stakeholders.
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities effectively.
