SUMMARY:CiHRG Workshop for Veterans
DESCRIPTION:The Central Illinois Human Resources Group presents a Workshop for Veterans \n\nVeteran Transitions: Selling Yourself to Your Future Employer \n\nOctober 14\, 2014 \n\nTime: 8:00 a.m. - 11 a.m. (check in & continental breakfast 7:30 am) \n\nLocation: Hilton Garden Inn\n\nRSVP: by October 8th at noon for this free workshop \n\nEmail: lorianne@essclean.com\n\nCall or text: \n\nleave full name\, branch and MOS \n\n\n\nPlease Note: There will be an opportunity for Veteran job seekers to share employment information and resumes electronically after the workshop to be accessed by local employers. We will email a link to attendees. More direction and information will be given at the end of the workshop. \n\n\n\nMilitary experience is tough to understand for individuals who have never experienced it. With so many acronyms and words that are not used in everyday life\, understanding how military experience translates into the corporate environment can be difficult for hiring managers to comprehend. \n\nThere are ways the veterans themselves can help fill this understanding gap. Through the words they use on their resume\, the information they share in the interview and how they explain their experience overall\, hiring managers can gain a better understanding of how their experience matches an open role. \n\nIn this complimentary workshop\, Sabrina Baker will present information to help veterans translate their military skills into civilian roles\, build their confidence with interviewing and talk about key things veterans should be aware of before transitioning into the workplace. \n\n\n\nKey Learnings: \n\n Attendees will understand the struggles hiring managers face to translate military skills and how the stigmas associated with veteran candidates affect that. \n\n Attendees will be given resources to help them write resumes that translate into civilian roles and avoid overly military focused terms. \n\n Attendees will be given tips and tricks for interview confidence and ways to answer questions to help the interviewer understand how their experience relates to the open role. \n\n Veteran candidates bring highly sought after skills to the workplace\, but if those skills are not articulated correctly they may be misunderstood or overlooked. This issue can be fixed through a joint effort between veterans and hiring managers. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio \n\nSabrina Baker\, PHR is the founder and CEO of Acacia HR Solutions. She serves on the Illinois Society of Human Resources Council board. She is a regular contributor to their We Know Next blog. After experiencing her own layoff in 2010\, Sabrina became very passionate about helping job seekers find work. Through her business and volunteer efforts she makes helping people find jobs a priority. Sabrina was named one of the Top 100 HR Influencers to follow on Twitter via the Huffington Post in 2013 and one of the Faces of Recruiting and Staffing by HR Marketer in 2014. \n\n\n\nClick here for event flyer.
